“Stress” tends to be a blanket term, but the feeling can actually manifest a few different ways. While we can’t avoid stress altogether (nor should we try), understanding the main variations of stress can help you determine which one you’re dealing with at any given time so you can better manage it.

What is stress, anyway?

The American Psychological Association (APA) defines stress as the physiological or psychological response to internal or external stressors. Signs of stress include heart palpitations, sweating, dry mouth, shortness of breath, fidgeting, fast speech, and negative emotions. When experienced in high amounts, stress can negatively affect mental and physical health and quality of life.
